Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) (aka Megalomania)

According to the World Health Organization, Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is described as, “A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (either in fantasy or actual behaviour), need for admiration, and lack of empathy that begins by early adulthood and is present in a variety of situations and environments.”
In order for a person to be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) they must meet five or more of the following symptoms:

 Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)

 Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love.

 Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions).

Rarely acknowledges mistakes and/or imperfections.

 Requires excessive admiration.

 Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favourable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations.

 Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

 Lacks empathy: is unwilling or unable to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.

 Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her.

 Shows arrogant, haughty behaviours or attitude.

Theodore Millon identified five subtypes of narcissist. Any individual narcissist may exhibit none or one of the following:

 unprincipled narcissist - including antisocial features. A charlatan - is a fraudulent, exploitative, deceptive and unscrupulous individual. (Pronounced as JILMART in Sinhala)

 amorous narcissist - including histrionic features. The Don Juan of our times - is erotic, exhibitionist.

 compensatory narcissist - including negativistic (passive-aggressive), avoidant features.

 elitist narcissist - variant of pure pattern. Corresponds to Wilhelm Reich's "phallic narcissistic" personality type.

 fanatic type - including paranoid features. A severely narcissistically wounded individual, usually with major paranoid tendencies who holds onto an illusion of omnipotence.

My personal belief is that Mahinda Rajapaksa is afflicted with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). If you have been closely observing his shenanigans since he came to power in November 2005, (especially the recent week long Tamasha that was organised for his second inauguration as PresiDunce), you too would have come to the same conclusion after reading the observations of the WHO and Theodore Millon which are given above. I further believe that according to Theodore Millons identified five subtypes of narcissist, Mahinda Rajapaksa falls in to the category of,

 unprincipled narcissist - including antisocial features. A charlatan - is a fraudulent, exploitative, deceptive and unscrupulous individual. (Pronounced as JILMART in Sinhala)

and

 fanatic type - including paranoid features. A severely narcissistically wounded individual, usually with major paranoid tendencies who holds onto an illusion of omnipotence.

Now the 64 million dollar question is, WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
Short of a peoples’ revolution or the grim reaper having mercy upon us and giving Rajapaksa what he deserves...I see no other solution to the continuation of his dictatorial rule in the near future!

The sentencing of J.S. Tissainayagam

George Bernard Shaw once said, “Assassination is the extreme form of censorship.” (Remember Lasantha?). One is also reminded of words of the 19th century poet Heinrich Heine who said, “Whenever books are burnt, men also, in the end are burnt.”

The Dictatorship of Sri Lanka today is only the latest in a long line of Dictatorships worldwide who have tried to snuff out unpalatable ideas and comments by abducting, intimidating, beating and killing its journalists. J.S.Tissainayagam is one of the many such journalists who has been given a prison sentence of 20 years.

The first recorded victim of censorship was Socrates who, in 399 BC was forced to drink poison for ‘denying the gods and introducing new divinities.’ In China, in 213 BC, Emperor Shih Huang-Ti had all writing not pertaining to agriculture or medicine burnt. His target: Confucius’ thoughts. Present day China is no better.

During the last century, it was the communists who most systematically censored books and hounded their authors. Writers in every communist country from East Germany to Vietnam were forced into concentration camps. Boris Pasternak, Joseph Brodsky, Milan Kundera, Czeslaw Milosz and Alexander Solzhenitsyn were just a few. Hitler’s Germany burnt the books of Jewish authors and liberals, exterminating thousands in their notorious gas chambers and forcing others to flee. In Mahinda’s Sri Lanka, over 14 journalist’s, the majority of them tamils have been killed in the past 3 years. Many more journalist’s have been abducted, beaten and intimidated to keep them from writing the truth.
Sometime back the Government blocked access to the Tamilnet, but what the Government does not understand is that with the advance of technology, censorship has become obsolete. The truth is only a click away. All you need to do to read the Tamilnet is to go to a proxy site.
In today’s day and age it is no longer possible to stop the message or the truth getting out by killing or imprisoning the messenger.

If this sorry state of affaires continues, this country will be known the world over as, “The Autocratic, Dictatorial Banana Republic of Sri Lanka!”

Xyklon B was humane?

The landscape is poxed with craters,
Women and children and old people are,
Not gassed to death by Xyklon B but,
Bombed to bits by screaming jets.

The jungle is one big concentration camp,
Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, Treblinka,
All rolled into a thirty something,
Square kilometre ”No Fire Zone”,

2,50,000 Jews of Haysia,
On the Idiot Island under Hindiyar,
Saturated with rockets, shells and cluster bombs,
A crude but effective “Final Solution”,

The brainchild of the Rogerproxy Brothers,
In hindsight Xyklon B seems humane,
But no one cared then,
And no one cares now.

NATIONAL ACCIDENT COUNCIL OF SRI LANKA!

Have an Accident Today!
Support this Revolutionary New Way to Solve the Overpopulation Problem!

Let’s face it! We all have to die someday, so when we do, we might as well die fast!
Why wait for lingering disease or slow, tormenting old age?

Let us show you how to have a quick, easy accident!

* Join the armed forces and ask to be transferred to an operational area!

* Travel regularly by bus. According to the law of averages, you’re more than likely to eventually board a bus that has a parcel bomb on it. You figure out the rest!

* Always use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road. Cross the road at a leisurely pace, and leave the rest to the crazed private bus drivers and other road hogs that drive on our roads!

* Regularly attend political meetings of high profile ministers and try to gat as close as possible to them, so as not to miss a word they say. Eventually when a suicide bomber detonates himself or herself, you might be one of the lucky victims!

* Don’t stop at army check points! When the soldier shouts Halt! Put your foot down on the accelerator and drive on! In a few seconds you will hear the sound of gunshots. You’re in luck if the soldier is a good shot. You’ll probably get a bullet through you’re head and you wont feel a thing!

* When you’re stopped at a check point and you’re bag is checked, look nervous, turn around and run like hell! Once again, you’ll be in luck if the soldier who shoots you is a good shot!

* Go hiking with your friends to un-cleared areas in the North and East of Sri Lanka. If you are lucky, you might step on a mine or be blasted to smithereens by a booby trap!

* Don’t go for your December holidays to Europe or the Caribbean. Take your family to beautiful Kill E No Chee! From morning to night you and you’re loved ones will be serenaded by the sounds of incoming shells, multi-barrel rockets and bunker buster bombs dropped by MIGS and Kafir jets! It will only be matter of time before you and you’re family are blasted to kingdom come by one of these smart bombs!

Mary’s father had a ‘White Van!’

(sung to the tune of “Mary had a little lamb”)

Mary’s father had a ‘White Van,’
It was as white as snow!
And everywhere their neighbour went,
The van was sure to follow!

It followed him to work one day,
And then abducted him,
His family searched high and low,
But there was no trace of him!

Bah! Bah! Arms Dealer!

(sung to the tune of “Bah! Bah! Black Sheep!”)

Bah! Bah! Arms dealer have you any bribes?
Yes sir! Yes sir!
Four money bags full!
One for the ‘Commander in Chief,’
And three for his three brothers,
And none for the village boy who fights in the north!

Oh You Deadly Cyanide!

(sung to the tune of “Oh My Darling Clementine”)

Round my neck there hangs a chain,
And on it’s end there is a vial,
It is small and looks quite deadly,
And we call it cyanide!

Oh you deadly, oh you deadly,
Oh you deadly cyanide,
You don’t taste good like a toffee,
But for suicide, you’re just fine!

Three Blind MIG Pilots!

(sung to the tune of “Three Blind Mice”)

Three blind MIG pilots, three blind MIG pilots,
See what they bomb, see what they bomb,
They bombed a house that had people inside,
And said they blasted a terrorist camp,
Did you ever see such a thing in you’re life,
As the three blind MIG pilots.

Nursery Rhymes for children from the North East of Sri Lanka!

When the MIGS start dropping bombs!
(sung to the tune of “London Bridge is falling down”)

When the MIGS start dropping bombs,
Dropping bombs, dropping bombs,
When the MIGS start dropping bombs,
There’ll be a ‘Big Blast!’

Take your kids and run away,
Run away, run away,
Take your kids and run away,
There’ll be a ‘Big Blast!’

Find a place to hide away,
Hide away, hide away,
Find a bunker right away,
There’ll be a ‘Big Blast!’

Just admit you’re nearest kin,
Nearest kin, nearest kin,
Don’t let any neighbours in,
There isn’t enough room within!

Don’t forget you’re ID card,
ID card, ID card,
You will need it later when,
They stop you at a check point!

When the MIGS have flown away,
Flown away, flown away,
You’ll be safe to make your way,
And live inside you’re ‘Bombed House!’

Why?

Why should I be forced to speak your language,
Follow your culture and adhere to your religion,
When I have a language, a culture and a religion of my own?

Is it because there are more of you and less of me,
That you try to force me?
With your funny rules and silly laws!
For sixty years you had your way,
But now I think I’ll have my say!

Your thoughts are not my thoughts,
Neither are your ways my ways.
There might be more of you and less of me,
But I’ll always fight for my right to be free!

The full moon day might be ‘holy’ to you,
But to me its just another holiday!
Like a Saturday or Sunday, a day to relax!
With fried beef for a bite and a beer on the side!

I may be not be perfect, but I’m no hypocrite!
I eat all kinds of meat and my favourite is beef.
You say you’re a vegetarian, but gorge yourself on fish!
Isn’t ice cream, cake and wattalappan made out of eggs?

You say alcohol is bad, that’s your point of view.
I enjoy a drink or two, doctors agree with me too.
Once a man from Nazareth turned water into wine.
Now people the world over drink wine while they dine.

On the full moon, a man kills a bull for food.
He is fined fifty thousand and sentenced to jail.
A MIG bombs the rebels that very same day.
Body parts strewn allover, can’t be used for food.
The pilot gets a medal, he doesn’t go to jail.
Hypocrites like you should rot in hell!

Why? I ask why? Can’t you leave me alone?
Let me live according to my culture,
And you according to your own!
If you’re a vegetarian, that’s fine by me,
Let me eat my fried pork, roast chicken and beef!

Bulls, pigs and chickens or the fish in the sea!
Nothing lives forever including you and me!
So lets eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die,
You sip your ‘Kola Kenda’ and I’ll gulp down my beer!

Peace Is Not Marching Away To Be Killed!

Peace Is Not Marching Away To Be Killed.
The son never saw his father marching away to be killed.
His father was killed before he was born.
His mother never spoke of men ‘marching to the war’ or ‘marching to defeat terrorism,’
Or even ‘marching to save country, race and religion.’
She always spoke of men marching away to be killed.
She was first orphaned and then widowed when her father and husband,
Marched away to be killed.

Peace to her is the men she loves, not
Marching away to be killed.

Poems for those who care!

Operation Barbarossa and how not to count your chickens before their hatched !

Germany 1941
The victory music was chosen in advance. “You’ll hear that often in the near future,” Adolf Hitler boasted to dinner guests one night in 1941 after playing on the Gramophone a passage from Liszt’s Les preludes. Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels was optimistic as well.

“The Fuhrer estimates that the operation will take four months,” he wrote in his diary. “I reckon on fewer.” At 5.30 on the morning of June 22, 1941, Goebbels had Les preludes played over the radio before announcing Germany’s surprise invasion of the Soviet Union that had begun two hours earlier. “A glorious, wonderful hour has struck, when a new empire is born,” he wrote in that day’s diary entry. “Our nation is making her way up into the light.”

The assault kicked off 129 years to the day Napoleon launched his Grande Armee toward Moscow, the Germans had amassed one of the largest strike forces ever: more than 3 million troops along a 1,600 km front, supported by 3,350 tanks, 2,000 aircraft and 7,200 artillery pieces. Stalin refused to act on clear evidence of the buildup. “You can’t believe everything Intelligence says,” he chided his top generals in mid-June.

Hitler erred as dramatically. He underestimated the Soviet Union’s resources, believing for example, that it had only 10.000 tanks, not the actual 24,000. More fatefully, Hitler’s racial delusions blinded him to the prowess of his foe. Slavs, he was convinced, were no match for Teutonic warriors, and the regime of “Jewish Bolshevism” could not withstand the coming blow. “You have only to kick in the door,” the Fuhrer explained to Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, the commander of Army Group South, “and the whole rotten structure will come crashing down.”

The fight to the death with the Soviets lasted not four months but four years – through the blood-drenched ordeals of Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad and Berlin with the ultimate defeat of the Germans.

Sri Lanka 1995
The Sri Lankan Governments 21,000 troops entered the Jaffna town. The Tamil capital had become a ghost town. Most of the roughly 10,000 fighters of the LTTE had melted away into the jungle. The majority Sinhalese expected the war to end with the fall of Jaffna. The LTTE relocated to the Wanni jungle and continued its fight for a separate state.

In a survey taken before the Tigers broke the truce in April 1995, only 16 percent of Sri Lankans said they believed in a military solution to the country’s civil war. A follow-up poll taken by the same group, Mitofsky International after the capture of Jaffna found that 67 percent favoured a military solution.

Sri Lanka 2008
The war did not end in 1995 as predicted by Government pundits. It has raged on for more than 13 years since the capture of Jaffna. Now the Government says it is on the verge of capturing the LTTE stronghold Killinochi and ending the war. Yes, the Government might capture Killinochi in the near future, and then the Tigers will revert to hit-and-run guerrilla tactics, basing themselves in the Wanni jungle. The well known dictum of ‘War being a continuation of politics by other means,’ is been practiced to the fullest by the present government as they are unable to find a solution to the economic woes of the gullible majority. The majority, once again have been hoodwinked by the ‘War Carrot’ that the government has dangled towards them.

What I can say to the Government of Sri Lanka, and the ‘Gullible Majority’ is, “Don’t count your chickens before their hatched!”

The ‘Silent Minority’ of which I am one, believes that the only way there will be peace in Sri Lanka, is only if extensive power is devolved to the people living in the North and East.

When the ‘Prevention of Terrorism Act’ is revoked, and there are no more ‘check points,’ and the armed forces are confined to their barracks with only the police handling the day to day law enforcement in the whole of Sri Lanka will be the day that we the ‘Silent Minority’ believe that the war has finally ended!

Until then, “God help us all!”

The Sick Man of Asia

Winston Churchill opposed granting independence to India. He had a very poor opinion of the Indians’ ability to manage their own affairs. In a speech to the House of Commons in 1946, he castigated the Labour government for relinquishing power and handing India over to Indian leaders. He said: “Power will go into the hands of rascals, rogues and freebooters. Not a bottle of water or a loaf of bread will escape taxation. Only the air will be free, and the blood of these hungry millions will be on the head of Attlee. These are men of straw of whom no trace will be found after a few years. They will fight among themselves, and India will be lost in political squabbles.”

In February Sri Lanka celebrated 60 years of independence. On July 25th it was 25 years since the anti-tamil riots of July 1983. We all know that the dominant Sinhala community was responsible for promoting a conflict which was completely avoidable. The ethnic conflict has extracted a heavy price on all Sri Lankans. Democracy has been completely subverted and the Island has been turned into an authoritarian state. The draconian ‘Prevention of Terrorism Act’ and other similar legislations, and many years of the country being under a State of Emergency has led to the exercise of arbitary powers by successive governments.

Today abductions, killings, intimidations, frisking of individuals, searches of houses, stoppages of traffic and roadblocks have become routine in the daily life of harassed citizens, mainly Tamil. Thousands of people, both civilian and uniformed, Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims have been killed and the number wounded and crippled is too large to be counted. Lakhs have been displaced and become homeless refugees in Sri Lanka and India.

Churchill’s gloomy prophecy of India seems to have come true in Sri Lanka. The current generation of Sinhala leaders have proved to be men of straw who spend their time squabbling with each other whether or not to devolve power to the minorities. The cost of living is sky high and corruption has become a part of life. The war is being stage managed by the government media, and Sri Lanka’s future looks dismal and grey.

There are only two possible ways in which things can be set right in Sri Lanka. One realistic, and the other pure fantasy. The realistic possibility is that extraterrestrials will land in a spaceship and set everything right. The fantasy is that the people themselves will find a solution to their problems.

Sri Lanka…A Land Like No Other!
